The primary purpose of foster care is to provide a safe and stable environment for a child who cannot be with his or her parents for some reason. To provide normalcy, guidance and essential tools to children to help them prepare for society. Lastly to be able to offer a community base program which will allow children in care to receive all the resources within the community that is offered to a foster child.
To become a foster parent the time can vary. You need to be at least 21 to complete the agency application and screening process which includes passing a criminal background check, stable finances and housing and transportation. Complete the home study and safety fire and health inspection complete 30-50 hours of foster parent training along with CPR-and First -Aid Certified. with basic knowledge and capability to be able to electronically communicate.
According to the most recent data, there are currently more than 400,000 children in foster care ranging from infants to 21 years of age. All of these children have experienced loss and some form of trauma and are learning to grow in a stable environment. The average child remains in foster care approximately a year and in most cases reunifies with the parents and/or family.
